How do planetarium apps work ?
Specifically how does the phone know which way it's pointing ? I know about accelerometers and GPS, but I'm pretty sure my phone does not have a compass.
OK, I missed that. It does have a Hall sensor according to the specs. But it does not show up under the settings menu, and there does not seem to be a built-in app that uses it, which seems a bit weird. It's an Asus ME173X, and was not especially expensive (no 3G).

What type of phone do you have? The iPhone has a compass, so does the Galaxy and most Android devices.
