having trouble breathing due to severe back pains, what should I do?

    Ankylosing spondylitis can do this. Have you been told you have that condition? Please click this link for some advice (under the section labeled "The Chest"):

    Even if you have a different back pain condition, the advice there may help give you enough relief to breathe more easily.

    Pain that affects breathing is at least a 9 on a 1-10 scale, if not 10, and pain this severe that does not respond to self-help as suggested in that link is often considered a medical emergency. You may need to seek medical help quickly. Untreated with shallow breathing long-term, you would be at risk for developing pneumonia.
