Why is this guy distancing himself from me?

I've known this guy for a few months now, and at the start he would text me all the time. He told me he liked me. We went on a few "dates" or "hangouts"
Just recently though he hardly ever texts me, and when he does it's very vague. He said he's sorry for distancing himself, but he never told me why he is. He still sends love hearts in the very few texts he sends, so I'm confused. 
I just want to be his friend, and it's as if he's not letting me.

Guys will send love hearts to a million girls, they'll even tell multiple girls they actually love them! Doesn't mean it's true. If he wanted to talked to you he would, think about that. If you just want to be his friend don't analyse what he's doing. Talk to him and ask him why it seems like he's distant, what have you got to loose? Nothing, he can either tell you why or choose not to. If he doesn't give you an answer.... Don't text him first, and when he texts you be vague or don't respond at all until he texts you a second time. If he asks you what's wrong then tell him you don't have time for part time people and if he wants to be your friend its a two way street. If you like him as more than a friend which is why you might be so worried about this, then don't worry there's plenty of other guys who will bend over backwards to speak to you. Don't stress over one guy, plenty more will appreciate you.

Guys are ignorant most of the time at the fact that girls over analyze texts.  Just tell him how you feel straight out if you ever want an answer.  If he wants to move forward with you it will all be good, if not at least you'll know.  Best of luck to you!!

something is up, obviously. You either take it to mean byebye and forget about him or you ask him to tell you what's wrong. Don't put yourself in this in between state
