What is your opinion of organized Atheist organizations? Do you think they help Atheists or do they give Atheists a bad name?

Update:

I'm thinking about the way that organizations such as Atheist Alliance International and Freedom From Religion raise a stink when religious symbols and structures are found in places that are possibly government funded. Ten Commandments statues at courthouses and the like. I am an atheist (small 'a' because I don't associate myself with anyone) who isn't really bothered by religion, but worries that organizations may give people like me a bad image.

More than anything else they add to the perception of Atheism being organized with a definite platform and dogmas, sacred icons etc. and so is a quasi-religion. It also reinforces the notion that atheists have a anti-god/anti-religious agenda and that atheism is not just a passive absence of belief but an active unbelief. If noting else they certainly undermine the atheists in the forum who argue the very opposite of what atheist organizations represent.

Atheism is just the disbelief in gods I did not know you had to be a member of an organization. Any organized atheist thing is really just not productive and is basically useless.

Well, the Atheist Community of Austin seems cool. They put out the Atheist Experience.

I once read up a little bit on Madelyn Murray O'Hair. I found her very boring, full of herself. I wondered why she would bother forming "American Atheists". Why bother?

I don't have any experiences with any, don't know of any. Can't give an opinion.

i think its a good thing that they file law suits against people, organizations, and government institutions who violate the separation of church and state.

I think they suck. Atheists give themselves a bad name through their actions and hate.
