Donating Blood Platelets?

I donated just the platelets a few months back and they put the plasma back into my body. They told me I had to wait 112 days before I could donate again. Why is that?

Current FDA guidelines allow plateletpheresis donations twice a week, with a maximum of 24 donations a year, if the donor's platelet counts remain within acceptable levels. If red cells are unable to be returned to the donor during collection (kit failure, etc.), then the donor is deferred for 56 days, due to red cell loss. A deferral of 112 days is required following the donation of double red cells by apheresis.

Contact the donor services manager and ask to review your case.
