Lucifer is simply Judiasm's, Christianity, and Islam's version of Prometheus from Ancient Greek mythology.

Lucifer literally translates to "The Light Bringer", and Prometheus gave fire to the humans. You see the similarity? 
Lucifer gave knowledge to humans by tempting Eve in the Garden of Eden. It's simply the same story, re-told, and with a few tweaks.
