In the future will it be common to see 'mega fights' failing to happen?

We all know the fight of the 21st century hasn't happened and doesn't look like happening anytime soon. Whoever you blame the fact is the fight didn't happen when it was superheated back in 2010. Despite it not happening both have had very lucrative fights (Floyd-Cotto/Alvarez, Pacquiao-Marquez 3 & 4) since then so it's not like there has been any major urgency from either camps, just the fans.

Who knows when the next mega fight not involving Mayweather or Pacquiao will happen but sooner or later there will be one... and another in each generation that goes by. The question is will they actually happen or are the days of megafights that everyone wants to see over?

Pac-De la Hoya a super fight? That's the biggest rip-off of the 21st century! Oscar virtually did not have anything left as Freddie Roach noted from early as the pre-fight promo. Oscar had to boot out Edwin Valero from his training camp for giving him a shiner! Many suspected ODLH hardly trained for that fight. Oscar naturally lost by retirement after being thoroughly thrashed by Pacman but he happily went to the bank with perhaps his biggest retirement check.

In fairness though, I think the fights thus far that define the current century included a few that involved Pacquiao ( vs. Marquez ), Morales ( Pacquiao, Barrera ), Mayweather ( Castillo, Cotto, Alvarez and Maidana ), Marquez ( Pacquiao series, Diaz series and Katsidis ), Corrales ( Casamayor, Castillo ) Ward ( Froch ), Lewis ( Klitschko, Tyson, Holyfield ) and Hopkins ( all his fights since Taylor 1 and 2 ).

With the Top Rank-GBP cold war thawing, hopefully, we can get to see more super fights in the coming years.

They'll happen, simply b/c money talks over everything.

Just a matter of having two very popular fighters be within the same weight range.

They will start happening all the time, after Floyd, and Whladimir are done. People are tired of seeing these dominant champions not fighting the top guys.

Since 2000, we've had a few (proper superfights):

    MAB v Morales

    MAB-Hamed

    MAB-Pacquiao

    Pac-Marquez

    Pac-Morales

    Pac-Bradley

    Pac-DeLaHoya

    Pac-Hatton

    Pac-Cotto

    Cotto-Mayweather

    Mayweather-DeLaHoya

    Mayweather-Mosley

    Mayweather-Marquez

    Mayweather-Hatton

    Mayweather-Castillo

    Mayweather-Corales

    Corales-Castillo

    Castillo-Hatton

    Hatton-Tszyu

    Tszyu-Judah

    DLH-Vargas

    DLH-Mosley

    DLH-Trinidad

    DLH--Hopkins

    Hopkins-Trinidad

    Trinidad-Vargas

    Trinidad-Mayorga

    Mayorga-Forrest

    Forrest-Mosley

    Hopkins-Calzaghe

    Calzaghe-Jones

    Jones-Hopkins

    Calzaghe-Lacy

    Jones-Tarver

    Lewis-Tyson

    Lewis-Holyfield

    Lewis-Klitchko

But after Lewis retired and the Klitchkos refused to fight, heavyweight had none to offer

Calzaghe cleaned out 168-175 then quit leaving these weights empty of proper champs.

Mayweather & Pacman then done the same to 122-154. But then didnt fight each other.

This all basically caused voids leaving only 1 true "super fight" left as other champs hadn't won titles from the title holders

    I agree.

Mayweather had several superfights that did not happen.

    Current superfights not happening include;

    Quillins-Martinez, Martinez-GGG, GGG-Martinez or GGG-Quilins.

    Guillermo Rigo vs Santa Cruz.

Still i'm glad some mega ffights happened like Pacquia-Bradley or Mayweather-Canelo
