    The original Shinola looked exactly like what it was -shoe polish. It was made from 1907 to 1960. The phrase 'You don't know...." you are referring to meant a person that was so dumb they couldn't tell the difference.

    Shineola is an old brand of shoe polish. Looks quite different from dung. Thus the expression "Can't tell $hit from Shineola" insultingly describes a person of very limited intellect.
