Yes they are unique and tough to categorize. Their concerts are pretty much the wildest you'll ever go to.
Tough for me to pick a favorite song but my favorite albums by them are probably the eponymous one (System of a Down) and Toxicity.
Probably the song of their's that is most liked among the larger population is "Toxicity".

I'm not ordinarily into that genre but I love their music anyway, so I'd say that they are.
Chop Suey, Toxicity and Question! are my favorites.
