too much focus is given to triggers and symptoms

the true cause of addiction and many manifestations of mental illness is one or more of many varieties of emotional deficiencies

target those .. and the related triggers and symptoms disappear or diminish enough to be able to be dealt with in the ordinary course of life

    Interesting. question.

Personally I think that it becomes a vicious circle. I think being addicted to the internet is caused by spending too much time on the internet but I would say that spending too much time on the internet is triggered by a need to escape from something in real life.

Perhaps an individual starts spending a little more time on the internet than he/she normally does in order to escape a stressful situation in their life. They relax watching youtube videos or internet gaming whatever. The more time they spend online the more they realise the internet has to offer them. They begin to spend more and more time online away from the stresses of their life.

I sometimes worry though that half the population is addicted to internet. Addiction to internet is almost invisible because so many of us suffer from it...possibly even myself and certainly my sister. Honestly every time I see her she is on that damn computer. She is only 12, she comes in from school , gets her laptop, sits down and doesn't move until about 11pm when she goes to bed) . My brother is almost as bad except he breaks from the computer to go play the playstation....equally bad. As for me...well there have been occasions when I've sat on my laptop for 6 hours solid and only come off it because I could feel a headache coming on. I seriously think so many kids are addicted to the internet but we don't treat it like an addiction or a mental illness because the majority of us use it for several hours every day so we don't see anything odd about being online for so long because everyone does it. An addiction has become part of "normal" human behaviour. This is bad. We need to get out more in the fresh air

yes and no, because when we think much more on anything then they dominate on our mind but if we ignore them we'll relieve after some time
