I feel old. What the **** is an Emo?

The emo subculture is a lot about depression and/or other emotions. People within this subculture (aka the emos) stereotypically tend to wear black a lot, mope around, wear dark eyeliner and listen to emotive hardcore music which, by the way, is actually where the subculture got its name from. "Emo" is a shortened form of the term "emotive hardcore". It was probably used first for the music before being applied to those who like and/or are fans of it.

It is important that you do not confuse emo with goth. Whereas tend to just use darkness to show some form of sadness and/or depression, goths actually have true interests in dark stuff. They see beauty in it, whereas emos tend to just use it as a way of showing emotion.

It is also important not to be prejudiced against emos or goths. There are so many negative stereotypes and, although I cannot actually speak for emo, some of those stereotypes are probably false. As a goth, I know that the notion that all goths are evil satanists is just not true. If you know anyone who actually describes themselves or has been described as being "emo", try not to panic just yet. Try to be fair and kind and just sit down and talk this through with them, ideally without the use of negative comments. Just try and get a better understanding of it and, if it is someone that you know, try not to worry too much about what they might do to you or anyone else. It is quite unlikely that the actions that they make that are based upon their feelings about other people will have changed all that much. In other words, if they were kind before, they will probably still be kind be a kind person now...

Emo is a style of rock music influenced by punk rock and featuring introspective and emotionally fraught lyrics. Because of the lyrics emos have been associated with stereotypes like self-injury. Those who identify with the emo subculture often wear t-shirts that bear the names of emo bands and have straight, black hair with colorful highlights.

An emo is a teenager that listens to emotive hardcore bands, dresses in band shirts, skinny jeans, and converse, and has super layered hair.

Emo is when someone wears a lot of black and who hates themselves. Often is depressed and may cut themselves to cope.
