Rights. My parents are asking my wife and I to be listed to take custody if/when my parents die. What happens say 5, 10, 15 years down the line if our circumstances change like we have more children and feel we can't take care him? How legally obligated are we? What happens to him if we don't? This is taking place in the state of Michigan.

If you are becoming the God parents of this child then not only do you have morale obligations, but also legal obligations. By law, once the child turns 18, the kid is on their own, by law. Yet, before the age of 18 you are responsible for the child. Since you are asking this question, you should call social services to relive this poor child of a life without love. Also, I'm not a lawyer.

They listing you does not create an obligation on your part. It simply speeds up the process if you can take them in.
