Does MS Security work as well as Norton?

My "computer guy" says that I don't have to buy Norton as the free Microsoft Security Essentials works just as well. Is this true?

MSE will work fine for your system as long as it is Vista and newer. The bad report tests about MSE were done using Windows XP. Like I said, if it is Vista or Windows 7 you will be fine. Windows 8 comes with it installed but it goes under a different name.

I have been using MSE for a long time and i can say that it does a very good job. It's passive and doesn't intervene much while on usage.

The features are on-par with Avast! Free - Also a very popular and reliable anti-virus.

If you need the extra features from Norton, go ahead and get it but i haven't seen any use of them.

My past experience with Norton products have been mediocre, although their online support is superb.

I believe from reading comments, Norton AVs are still a resource hog. There are better paid AVs out there like Kaspersky and ESET.

EDIT: Bottom post is completely irrelevant. Just sayin. If you want to boost a link, go spam on a hardware forum bud, not here on yahoo.

MS's A/V is a joke - go look at any LEGIT test - and you will see what I mean.

Norton is OK - I would never use it.

I work in IT - and not some $12.00 PC Tech. (nothing against them, they are just rookies)

Trust me when I tell you there are many better options out there. Dont mess with the free crap - it might be OK for people who do nothing but look @ email - and go to facebook. But if you want a lightweight, smart, dependable A/V - go look @ all the awards the 2013 Secure Anywhere A/V from webroot - PC Mag gave it the highest score it has ever given any software. Just do your research before you say anything else. And dont listen to those sights that pop up when you type "best AV 2013" in google with the URL of www.best-av-software-2013.com and all that - they are bogus. And dont listen to someone that says "I used it for years its great !" - that is hardly definitive.

I switched an entire company over to it and NOT 1 INFECTION IN 11 MONTHS, PERIOD. I had some employees that were getting infected 1x a week --- not any more. And it is cloud based and is the smallest pkg on resources there is.

Do yourself a favor and check it out.
