Can you answer a VOIP question?

I was told that the VOIP you purchase through a cable company is fundamentally different from the VOIP from a 3rd party source (like Vonage, BasicTalk, or Magic Jack). It is not a part of the internet service flow. It's a dedicated network for providing phone service. Can someone point me to some technical documentation describing this system?

When you purchase VoIP from the cable company the ATA is built into the cable modem. When on a voice call the cable modem prioritizes internet resources to VoIP and all other internet traffic through the modem becomes secondary. This assures you the highest quality voice call available.

When you plug a third party ATA into the cable modem resources are not prioritized to calls on that third party ATA, it could be subject to lesser quality voice calls if someone is downloading files in your home or office at the same time.

So, it's not a fundamentally different infrastructure system per se, just a way of the cable company offering you consistent voice quality that you might not experience using a third party provider.

I think that VoIP from a 3rd party dedicated provider would be better because it's mainly focusing on doing VoIP Phone calls if you don't need to have the best quality result for VoIP Calls you need to have a 3rd party VoIP Provider.

Getting VoIP service from reliable 3 party VoIP service providers because it is mainly targeting phone calls.
