Trying to improve my guitar composing, songwriting and improv?

I'm 20 and I first started playing guitar when I was about 13. I know basic chords (major, minor, 7 chords, etc.), a fair amount about scales, arpeggios, intervals and all that. However, I haven't played as much since I've started college and I'm trying to get back into playing. I really wanna develop a better ear so I can become a better songwriter and improviser. I wanna write good, interesting and melodic songs and put on a good live show with my improv. I can improvise decently in major, minor, dorian, mixolydian but I feel like I haven't developed my ear and vocabulary enough.

My biggest influences in music include Radiohead, Phish, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Neil Young, David Bowie, Bon Iver, Sigur Ros. My favorite guitarists are Trey Anastasio and Jonny Greenwood who are both influenced by classical and jazz. What's the best approach to take if I wanna get into those genres and make interesting contemporary music influenced by them like some of those I mentioned above? Any good books you'd recommend?

You should feel more and read less, my opinion is that you just need to play more, maybe with a good jazz band (if you have friends) if you don't then just record yourself and play over it. Try to be yourself, many musicians never studied music, they just played.
