how to space out poles for flatwork?
I'd like to know the approximate distance to space out trotting poles and canter poles as I'm starting to do more independent flatwork.
Obviously I've noticed that canter poles have larger spaces between them than trotting poles, but I'd like to know how many strides I should take between each pole when laying them out for a horse of about 15 hands.
Thank you!

Typically for a 15hh horse the spaces are:
- 3 large human strides between pole for canter (can also be used in trot)
- 1 normal human stride between poles for trot.
Obviously, every horse is different, so I would recommend trying these distances, and adjusting them if your horse keeps knocking the poles.
If the poles are knocked, then the poles are too close together. If the horse has to reach, or adds in an extra skip, then the poles are too far apart.

Four feet apart for trot poles.
Twelve feet for canter poles, more or less depending upon your horse's stride length.
The larger warmblood classes in today's hunters are starting to measure strides at 14'. But since you said your horse is 15hh, I think the 12' striding should be just fine.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lpVQM5C8vAE - These guys have some good videos. They are mainly about Showjumping however you could just extend the amount of trotting poles. They have another video which covers canter poles however I can't seem to find it, if you have time have a watch and you might find it.
Try experimenting by lunging your horse over a few poles to find out his stride lengths.
Good luck! :)
