Does anyone know what lower units are interchangeable with a 1962 5.5hp Johnson?
I have a 1962 5.5hp Johnson that runs perfectly, the only problem is it jumps out of gear, and the lower end froze. Now I've been told it is the clutch dog that is worn out. I've checked the bell crank and it is perfect and I've patched the crack that the ice made when it froze. I have it torn apart and the gears look fine, but I was wondering what other lower units are interchangeable with this motor other than the Evinrude version.

Evinrude lower units and some Johnson lower units in the 5 1/2 and 6 HP models from the late 1950 till the 1980s should work. The clutch dog should be replaced. They can be reversed, but that may have been done before.
