Should I go to College or University?

I'm in grade 11 and am thinking about what I'm going to do after highschool. I have two directions in mind. The first, which I would really love, would be to get a diploma in veterinary technology. It takes two years, and I would end up working in a vet's office.

The second would be to get a bachelor's degree in animal science. There are many different types of jobs you can get from this, but a lot of them don't involve working with animals, which I want to do.

The only university that offers the veterinary technology program, Dal, is known for having good programs and teaching students well. It has an extensive application process, complete with aptitude tests and interviews. Even if you do get considered, they have a very long waiting list and only accept 40 new students a year.

There is only one college that offers the program, Oulton, that I would consider going to, but it's a small college and isn't recognized as a 'good school' like Dal is, so it would make it harder to get a job after finishing the course.

The bachelor's in animal science is also offered at Dal, and is four years instead of two.

Is it worth it to go the two extra years, especially if I might not end up with a job I want? Or would it be better to go to to a lesser known college and end up with the carreer I want, but possibly not be able to find a job because of the school I went to?

Update:

I don't know if I would even be considered for the vet tech program at Dal because of my marks and my fear of interviews.

I don't know if I would get into the animal science at Dal either because of my marks.

My marks have always been in the 80's and 90's. My grade 11 marks currently range from 85 - 98.

Math (Pre-Calculus) - 85 (completed)

Chemistry - 86 (completed)

Biology - 90 (completed)

Law - 94 (completed)

Math (Geometry) - 96 (current)

Peer Helping - 96 (current)

English - 97 (current)

Band - 98 (current)

You should definitely do what you love. However, if you are afraid that you wont get in b/c if its competitiveness you could always apply to both programs/schools and just go with the one that you get into.

The worst thing would be to do nothing. If you don't get into the vet tech program and do get into the other, you can always work towards an animal science degree and reapply to the vet tech program if you choose to following year.

Just b/c the 4 yr program is at a school that doesn't have as good a reputation doesn't really mean too much. In the long run of your entire life, a slightly less renown school isn't going to matter one bit, you WILL find a job.

    Good luck!

Personally I would start now and go hard to get into the University. Even though it is a longer time in school and tougher to get into, it will give you the kick start you need to get the type of career you want. The extra two years can teach you more and better prepare you, and Universities because of their size and connections can offer you more while in school generally. But of course what is right for you can be different than what others think.
