Can I install a gas insert in my electric fireplace.--insert opening is 33"w x 26"h----?
This free standing electric fireplace is just not cutting it. We extremely love the look of the wood and granite mantle. We want to replace the insert with a gas one. I do have gas running outside along the wall. Naturally it would have to be vented properly. I have seen on some houses these silver boxes about 1' x 3' which I think are vents for a fireplace.

You have to have a sealing plate fitted between the gas appliance and sealed with gas tape. This will prevent fumes from the gas appliance gathering in the room. These are toxic fumes. The plate is fitted for the size of the chimney opening, and with natural gas, ventilation is essential.

I'd get a gas engineer to look at it, and to fit the fire if you can have one.
