A survey crew took a canoe UP the river and BACK paddling for 10 hours. They went 4km/h going UPSTREAM and 12 km/h DOWNSTREAM. How far UPSTREAM TO THEY GO?
I ALREADY KNOW THE ANSWER TO THIS SHITTT WHICH IS

4X-12Y=0

OK, I'll try to explain.
Call the trip upstream X and the the trip downstream Y.
You know it took 10 hours altogether, so that's how you get the first equation:
X + Y = 10
Travelling upstream, they travelled at 4km/h, so they travelled 4X km
Coming back they travelled at 12km/h, so the distance was 12Y km.
They ended up back where they started, so that's how you get the second equation.
4X - 12Y = 0
Word problems are difficult for a lot of people. This site has some examples that may help you.
