Is B12 really important?

More on B12 levels in vegans, heart disease and chronic diseases from a VEGAN registered dietitian:

"Ideally, you want your homocysteine levels below 10 µmol/l, with above 15 µmol/l being strongly associated with increased chronic disease (cardiovascular disease and early death).

The average homocysteine levels in the studies were (µmol/l):

omnivore – 11.0

lacto-ovo vegetarian – 13.9

vegan – 16.4

Average vitamin B12 levels were (pmol/l):

omnivore – 303

1 vegetarian – 209

vegan – 172"

Update:

It seems clear to me that B12 is important and many vegans aren't getting it. But I'm open to science that tells me different.

B12 is an essential micronutrient that CANNOT be synthesised by the body and is water soluble. this means that it has to be consumed regularly. I take tablets

This data is very true. I was vegan for 10 years but as I get older, I begin to experience more and more problems until one day my friend gave me a vitamin B supplement. I took it for one week daily, problem I have been fighting for years gone right away. I was puzzled.

I conclude that our body need vitamin B.

I begin to supplement by eating eggs every now and then.

But recently, I found out Algae, seeweed, and kelp all have lot of vitamin B more than eggs!! And that's why Japanese people live very long life. Out of all super centenarian still alive 24 of them, half of them are Japanese. The reason is that they eat a lot of seaweed and kelp!! Another key ingredient in those sea vegetable is Vitamin D!! Non-existence in any land based vegetables. All vegan are very low in Vitamin D level too, unless they are getting lot of sunshine or eating a lot of sea vegetable.

Here is a nutritional content graph compare Seaweed with Egg:

We may have evolved out of water 60 million years ago, deep inside of us are still that tiny vertebrate fish that love and thrive on algae!! Algae is the food of all food!!
