Ionic or covalent compound?
I am having trouble figuring out weather compounds are ionic or covalent. Are all compounds between a metal and nonmetal ionic? or just most? How else would you figure out if it is ionic or covelent compound?

suppose a compound NaCl (sodium chloride)
find out the electronegativity of both the atoms Na and Cl (using a periodic table ofcourse) and subtract them ,
if answer is less than 1.7 -its covalent
if answer is more than 1.7 -its ionic

Ionic bonds are mostly between Halogens and group 1 elements
rest of them are mostly covalent
