The book is held at rest above the person’s head.
The person pushes the book against the wall and it is held there by friction.
The person pushes a book along the floor with her foot in a circular path until it is returned to its starting point.

1. No work has been done. While there is a force applied there is no motion.
2. Same can be said for this example as the previous one. There is a force applied with no motion.
3. There is work done. There is a force applied by the person on the book which results in a motion.
