What's the minimum of time to go on point?

Hey. I just turned 14. My mom is thinking of moving to France and all. Anyways she said maybe I could start ballet over there. I've never done ballet. I took dance at my school and we did two dances which where completely ballet stuff. But it wasn't really ballet. It was more of a new dance that the teacher thought she could teach us "kinda thing". So I was wondering... If I start ballet this year and my feet or whatever are really really strong. (I've been taking other dance classes since I was 4) is it possible to have point shoes before I turn 18-20???? Or else just write why. And a lot of info. Please. No haters!!

Barring any physical disability, I don't see why not. In oder to be ready for pointe work you need strong, ankles, legs, feet and core along with balance and the ability to engage and hold your turnout without sickling. Most important is strong ballet technique and there is no short cut for that. In a good school, if you take three 90 minute ballet classes a week, it should get you there in about three years give or take. You need to learn how to do everything first on flat before you can do it en pointe. If you have very high arches and real ballet feet, it may take longer as those type of feet are most desirable, but are more unstable. If you have flat feet it will also take longer to build strength in your arch for pointe work. If you have an average normal size arch, pointe work is easier to get to.

I am sure you can find some teachers who are totally unqualified who do crazy things like putting someone en pointe after a few months or a year of ballet. That puts you at a much greater risk for injury and you will not be able to do much either other than hobble about. Those teachers should be avoided at all costs.

If you wait until you are really ready and strong, going from flat to pointe will be almost seamless. Dancers who wait until really strong and ready for pointe, fly right past the ones up too early.

Go for it! You should take ballet.

Yes, you'll go on pointe before 18-20. If you're ankles, feet, torso, abs are already strong, you'll be up there in around 3 years. Especially if you're already dancing. I'm sure you'll be fine.

    Good luck in Paris!

    Happy dancing!

Yes, it will take 2-3 years, usually 3 years. Good luck in France, I wish I was you!
