Can I become an Urban Planner with a BA in Human Geography?

I want to become a geography and biology teacher in high school, but I was just wondering if a BA in Human Geography could also take me into planning? I will be attending university this fall.

Human Geography is one of those broad fields of study in which you are supposed to pick a further specialization. If you pick subjects related to urban planning (or planning general) you will garner enough knowledge and skills to be valuable to any planning department. Pick relevant courses, research projects and internships and you'd fit right in. Provided the economy turns out OK, of course. Over here in Holland it is currently nearly impossible to find any jobs in human geography and planning, because the government is cutting jobs and traineeship programmes like there's no tomorrow.

Keep in mind that geography teachers are also supposed to know a lot about physical geography, when I try to explain to people what I studied, I explain it as such: You know how in high school you learned about volcanoes, but also about migration? Right, in university these two subjects are taught by different teachers, the part about volcanoes etc. is called physical geography and the part about how humans live on this planet is called human geography.

I know there are always discussions about cutting the subject in two in high school, but I've never seen any solid plans, so geo teachers are required to explain both physical and human geography to high school students. Most teachers I know focused on only one subject and were bad at explaining the other, but a good teacher is good at both subjects.

It's a common start. Normally you take a specialised Masters program after the fact. You might be better off with a combined BA/Sc specialised program in Planning, but a BA in Human Geography can certainly get you in the door, particularly if you take a lot of GIS courses, as GIS is big in planning (urban, transportation, environmental, etc) nowadays.
