Concerning sparkling soft drinks (sodas)?
The American soft drink industry fights hard against states subjecting sodas (and what are considered junk foods) to state sales taxes. Well, the Canadian province of Quebec charges its sales tax (15%!) on sodas, plus sodas' regular price is considerably more than in the States. Is Quebeckers personal consumption lower than that of Americans??

I doubt it, because it's still affordable. People who decide to not drink those drinks usually do it because they want to have healthier drinks with less sugar such as water. If someone whoever is a soft drink lover ( or just consumer) will still drink the same amount regardless of what the taxes are. Especially if they're used to the taxes. And Canadians will get used to the taxes. It's not like theyd be at all concerned what the same drink might cost in the US.
