When a question receives numerous stars + many answers and is then deleted, does the questioner keep the stars?

I recently answered a question from a teen who was considering what to do about a relative who was bugging her.
Question got 33 stars, many answers but just at the time when it would have rolled over into the voting phase, the question disappeared.
What goes on with that?

When a question is deleted, the stars on it are lost. This used to not be the case; several years ago, you WOULD retain the stars you received even if the question were deleted. The 'policy' changed sometime last year, though.
