you should clean daily under your foreskin Nick. Smegma itself is not dangerous, it is natural oils from your penis and dead skin cells that collect under your foreskin. It can start to smell quite bad, especially when exposed to air. Not cleaning can also lead to infections tho, and that is more serious. In a warm shower, pull your foreskin back as far as you can and rinse it with plain warm water, never use soap under your foreskin. It can dry out the skin and make it irritated and sore. It only takes a minute to wash under there every day and it will make it much better for you.

If the smegma has been there a long time it may be hard to remove initially. Be gentle and soak your penis with the foreskin pulled back, in warm water for a few minutes. That will help loosen the smegma and make it soft, so you can rinse it away easily.

No, you probably won't have an infection. Try to pull back the foreskin as far it goes back and clean with soap and water. You can also just use water. Don't force it. A washcloth may be needed.
