when your phone rings and.....?

ok, so when your phone rings at home and you answer by saying "Hello", do you find it really annoying that the people on the other end keeps saying "hello" back ?

i have answered so many times , i would say "hello", they say "hello", ( but just in-case they did not hear me the first time i would repeat it) if they say "hello" again , i get annoyed. Last night some one called and did this, so i said "if you can't say anything other then "hello" , i'm hanging up (and i did).

Anyone out there feel this way? how do you handle people like that? anyone have a theory why people are like that?

Update:

no, i mean when you KNOW they called your place for a certain person, like my kids friends or my mother inlaw, or whatever, they keep saying "hello" , if they don't ask for someone like my kid or wife or even myself - i just hang up, some people may think it's rude of me, but i know how to speak!

There are two likely reasons for this.

One possibility is that you are a victim of prank callers.

These idiots have nothing better to do than annoy others

by doing things like what you describe.

They want a reaction, so it's best to avoid providing one.

If the same twit keeps calling, pick up the phone,

but don't say anything, not even "hello".

They usually give up after a call or two without results.

The other possibility is that for some reason there is a fault in the phone system

that causes signals to fail to reach their destination.

In this instance, it's a good idea to tell the caller to hang up and try again

in the hope that a better connection will be made.

Be polite and patient with this type of call.

On one or two occasions, I've had to try as many as four times

    before getting a good connection.
