What is the best way to go about switching cell phone providers?

My AT&T Wireless contract ends on 11/30/2011. When my contract ends, I would like to switch to another provider (probably Verizon). This will be the first time I have ever switched cell phone providers, so can you give me any advice? Do I just call AT&T on Nov. 30, and cancel my service, or do I need to handle it another way?

Update:

I'm not sure if this is important or not, but my billing cycle ends on the 23rd of each month.

I'd call AT&T around the 23rd of the month (to be sure) and let them know that you will NOT be renewing your cellular contract and that they have your permission to remove ALL your information from their records. HOWEVER, if you would like to keep your currrent cell number, you can call your "new" provider and have them transfer your old number before-hand, otherwise AT&T can "give" that number to another customer.

sprint is amazingly accessible, they have some depraved inexpensive telephones that are particularly snazzy finding. The each and each and each thing plan in all fairness like fifty money a month in case you disclude push to chat.
