2002 Buick Century Custom start issue?

Just bought a used 2002 Buick Century Custom. It has 48000KM (roughly 30000 miles) on it. It was driven by one owner, and old couple. It is immaculate inside and out. We test drove it and it was perfect. We started and stopped it a few times on the way home ( gas up, get food, etc). The drive home ( 140KM , 87 miles) it was perfect. It drove better and more quiet than my 2008 Escape.

We got home, and were there for about 20 minutes when we wanted to show it off to my brother. Went to start it and it wouldn't go. The lights all work and it turns over but won't catch.

Any suggestions on what might be the issue? I have no problem taking it to a mechanic but would like to have a rough idea of what to tell him to look for. Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

If the problem (no start) only occurs when the car is hot, it may be a failing coil or ignition module.

Could also be a bad crankshaft position sensor.

I suggest you get the car started and take it to the nearest auto parts store and get them to pull the codes so you have a place to start in diagnosing this problem.

I'll give you a couple of ideas, but this is by no means a thorough diagnosis.

Bad Ignition Coil – Symptoms & Testing

    No start

    Black Smoke

    Rich Mixture

    Loss of Power

    Limited Acceleration

    Rough / Sluggish Running

Temperature Sensitive (May take time to cool Prior to Starting)

Bad Ignition Module – Symptoms & Testing

    Power Loss

    Rich Mixture

    Engine Shaking

    Engine Stuttering

    Random Shut-down

    Poor Fuel Economy

    Shut-off After Warm Up

    Strong Smell of Gasoline

Hi, I assume WOULDN'T GO and WONT CATCH, you mean cranks but wont start? To Begin with the mechanic that you take it to should know what to check for. First you check for spark at the spark plugs, then check for pulse at the injectors, check fuel pressure, pressure regulator, and compression. This tests will tell a mechanic where to start looking for the no start problem. On a no spark at the spark plugs, problem could be at the coil, inside distributor, pick up coil, wires, rotor, ignition switch, cam or crank sensor. On a low or no fuel pressure could be a clogged fuel filter, bad fuel pump, fuel relay, bad pressure regulator, improper fuel gauge registering fuel when there is none.No pulse to injectors, could be a bad distributor sensor, bad ECM ( computer) relay. Low cylinder compression could be, depending on engine, out of valve time, wore out rings, bad valves, blown head gasket. This is very doubtful that your engine has major problems. possibly fuel or ignition.

Could be the fuel pump. Sometimes if you give the fuel tank a little kick it will get the pump going again.. But if it goes drive it straight to the shop without turning it off as it will happen again and completely die

Have him check the the solenoid that pushes the bendix on the starter motor. The tend to stick sometimes when they are hot.Try tapping the starter motor with a piece of wood or a plastic hammer. But not so hard that you crack the starter motor housing.Good luck.
