How to configure a network using a switch?

I recently bought a 8 port switch to use a broadband internet connection between 2 computers. I have configured the settings so that the computers have 192.168.1.2 and 192.168.1.3 as their IP addresses. The default gateway was set to 192.168.1.1 (the IP address of my modem).

Though internet is working fine on both computers, I am not able to ping either computer from the other one (using ping 192.168.1.2)..

Please help me out so that both internet works and the 2 computers can be a part of a network.

Ping is usually blocked automatically by Windows Firewall or any other firewall unless ping is enabled.

If both are within the same IP range and the same SUBNET (255.255.255.0) then they should be able to "see" each other IF the firewall allows local traffic. What OS are you running, with that information you might get more assistance. If its windows, run the "network setup wizard" on each machine, put them in the same "workgroup" , enable file and printer sharing, share a folder or two and they should be networked..

The fact that both work on the internet and both are connected to the same switch PUTS THEM IN THE SAME NETWORK! Now all you have to do is correct the networking software.

It could be blocked by a firewall or an anti-virus, or even your switch / router's firewall system, check those settings to allow the ping (or i guess its called discovery)

Check to see if Windows Firewall is up, reason is that Windows firewall block pings by default.

Please check the Firewall Connection It may Blocked Your Ping i think,so check and change the settings, then you can also check in Anti-Virus Software it may also blocked that..You can also check the Ping of your connection at http://www.whoisxy.com/ping.aspx
