The differences between the CFL and NFL are most similar to...?

a) NCAA Div II and NCAA Div I

b) MiLB and MLB

c) Australian Rules Football and Rugby

d) I don't know enough about the CFL to make a comparison.

I'm just curious how NFL fans veiw the CFL.

Thanks to all who reply.

Update:

@ blm...what you're saying is true but exaggerated. No CFL club gets radically reworked when the NFL cuts happpen. It's very rare if any team adds more than 2-3 players. Of those, they are most likely players that were in the option year of their CFL contract and are obligated to return to a team if the NFL didn't work out.

The CFL is basically a reserve league for the NFL. That's one reason the NFL is reluctant to place a team in Toronto -- it would mess up for them what is a pretty good farm system. American players -- particuarly backs and linebackers -- who are ten pounds too light or one step too slow for the NFL can maintain their skills while hoping to make it into an NFL lineup. You see this every year in the CFL, when the lineups get radically worked over after the NFL teams make their pre-season cuts (which take place about halfway through the CFL season).

These are good players -- almost all of them have backgrounds from Division I American schools. Although the rules are very similar they do make some of the styles different -- players (like Doug Flutie) who are relatively small but very mobile can succeed in the CFL where they can't in the NFL. The larger field and three down system in the CFL makes the passing game more important, while the "pocket" quarterback can't succeed. You need a QB who can scramble and throw on the run.

Linemen don't cross over as well, as most NFL linemen are actually too large -- and therefore not mobile enough -- to succeed in the Canadian game.

The player who probably enjoyed the most success in both leagues was probably Warren Moon, who won several Grey Cups with Edmonton, and then became the starting QB for the Houston Oilers for a number of years.

  • I would say the FBS and FCS (the upper and lower half of NCAA D-I).
