Was the question on Freight Car Wheels Answered?
Some time ago someone was asking about the inside of freight car wheels that looked like impeller blades. There were quite a few answers and I forgot to follow the thread, what was the final outcome? What were the grooves that looked like impeller blades for?

There were excellent answers. I usually let a question go to a vote, as in this case, where derail got the nod.
