Did the O'Neill come from Northern Ireland?

My grandfather left Ireland in the early 1930's to go to Scotland and the ship building there.

I'm going on vacation to Ireland this summer but I'm not certain he did leave from the North.

Yes the O Neills are from the north historically. They owned half the land in Ulster before the Ulster plantation. This was one of the most gaelic parts of Ireland before this happened. They fled Ireland for Europe after the nine year war with England (1594-1603). They left around 1607 after loosing their land this was called the flight of the earls. If O neill was never defeated the Ulster plantation probably never would have happened. There is a good chance your grandfather is from somewhere in Ulster but you do get the name elswhere in Ireland.

The clan is historically centered in the north. Today, O'Niels are spread all over Ireland but there is still a higher concentration in the north.
