Did the majority of ship builders leave for Scotland from Northern Ireland in the early 1900's?

My Grandfather left Ireland at that time; in the1930's. He was a Rivetter and, once settled in Renton,Dumbartonshire,Scotland he worked on the first Queen Mary. The ship yard was on the River Clyde.

I ask because I'm planning a trip to Ireland and would love to see where he may have came from. He was an O'Neill so I think it would be from the north of Ireland but I'[m not sure.

I do remember him and my Father singing "The Homes of Donnigal".

Are there any old Irish on Yahoo Answers to educate me?
