Sidney Crosby concussion?

Doesnt anyone think its weird that NHL"s best player and face of NHL got concussion and the player who did it didn't get suspended or crucified?!??!

Update:

It was Victor Hedman, a great young NHL defensemen who took Crosby out. Even when I first saw the hit I thought Hedman would be suspended forever, but NOTHING happened!

Campbell and the rest of the NHL disciplinary team look at each hit individually. When determining a suspension, only 2 things are taken into consideration:

    1. The severity of the hit, which includes the actual hit, when during the game it happened, where, the score, so on and so forth.

    2. A previous record of the player making the hit. A guy like Matt Cooke will get a longer suspension than a Pavel Datsyuk for the same offense, because Cooke is a repeat offender and is known for his questionable antics.

On the other hand, the status of the player getting hit does is irrelevant to the suspension. Gary Bettman, the commissioner of the NHL, who is involved in the business aspects, is not in charge of suspensions. A good thing too, because it would obviously favor players who are good for the NHL's financial statements. Going back to the previous example, Datsyuk (hypothetically) would not deserve a 25 game suspension for elbowing Sidney Crosby in the head just because he is Sidney Crosby. But Cooke could get suspended 10-15 games nowadays for an identical elbow to a call-up.

For the Hedman example, I don't recall if there was a penalty called on the play, but the league always takes a look at hits that result in injuries, and often times there are suspensions handed out to players who did not even receive a penalty for the action. The players in the NHL should avoid hitting the stars (like they did with Gretzky in the 80s) because of the fear that a guy like McSorley would jump them after the fact, not because of a 50+ game suspension that could ensue.

It wasn't the Hedman hit alone. In the previous game Crosby took a shoulder to the head from Dave Steckel of the Caps in the Winter Classic. After the Hedman hit it is quite possible that Crosby had concussions in consecutive games, with the first one being undiagnosed. The Steckel shoulder more than likely caused the most damage, the Hedman hit accelerated the condition.

The NHL has a serious issue on its hands. Not just Crosby, but Gaborik, Eric Staal, Marc Savard and others all have been concussed. With star players out of the lineup, the NHL needs to review blows to the head and the shoulder and elbow pads that these players are wearing. The protective equipment have now become weapons. Nobody pays to see players like Steckel and Matt Cooke. They want to see the big names, not the ham-and-egger 3rd and 4th liners.

  • There were two hits responsible for Sidney Crosby's concussion. The David Steckel hit in the Winter Classic, which was Sidney Crosby not looking where he was going and Stecks trying to avoid the hit; and the Victor Hedman hit, which appears to be a boarding infraction. If it wouldn't be a suspension had another player been hit, so why should it be a suspension because he hit Crosby?
