If you want a new / additional cat - where would you get it from?

Would you take into consideration to adopt one cat/kitten out of the local pond, animal shelter, rescue center or would you just check your local newspaper, or buy at the pet store or a breeder?

If you would prefer pet store/breeder / newspaper - would you also go there when you knew that cats/kitten in pots or kill shelter are on (often very tight) deadline to be adopted out or put down if their time runs out?

How much are you willing to pay for your cat or would you rather try to get one for free?

If preferable for free - did you thought about upcoming vet bills for annual shots at least and unexpected bills if your cat gets sick or had an accident?

If you think you can't afford vet bills and therefore trying to get your cat for free - did you thought about saving up to be prepared for your cat's emergency treatment if it happens?

I would get a shelter cat--probably from the local Humane Society, which is where I got my little monster kitten. Shelter cats have current vaccinations, are microchipped, and have been spayed/neutered. Plus, they have had at least some vet care, so you know basically what their health is like. With free kittens, that's always a gamble.

If I wanted a purebred show cat, I would go to a reputable breeder (we are waiting for a new show kitten now).

If I wanted a nice household pet to show (since ours doesn't like shows), then I would either go to a shelter or pick one from the local farms and neuter, give shots, etc. I've seen a few really cute kittens that I'd love to have and show, but both were female and our female would never allow another female in the house. She doesn't like it when the boys come in!

However, even if adopting from a shelter, I'm pretty picky as to which one I would choose as I'm looking at "potential" show cat in the household pet classes - so the cat would have to be flashy, etc.

Where I live there are no local newspapers, no SPCA, no animal control and no cat breeders.

If I require a cat, this is the drill.

    - go to the local coffee shop.

    - let it slip out that I require a cat.

    - by noon I'll get 4-5 calls from local farmers offering me a free cat or someone will offer me one on the spot.

The alternate method is to walk across the street to the feral colony and steal a kitten from them (if you can catch it). Of course, at every opportunity the feral cats will try to lure it back. I have one cat now that they lure away to hunt with them but she returns to the house every night.

    Animal shelter.

They are all vet checked and cost will include vaccinations and being spayed. The cats are also socialized and their temperament is taken into consideration when being put up for adoption.
