Indeed. He tries to chip away at it (further dulling the small blade he'd soon use to cut through his arm), and he tries to create a kind of pulley system (to no avail).

I haven't seen the film, but I have seen his interviews, and I'm sure he tries to pull it out and then resorts to chipping away at the boulder.
