Ok, the elements that form covalent bonds tend to be closer together on the periodic chart and similar in electronegativity. Elements that form ionic bonds are further apart, more metallic and more non-metallic, on the periodic chart and have a higher electronegativity difference.

Ionic bonds are formed more by electron transfer while covalent bonds are more electron sharing.

Ionic groups form crystals while covalent groups form molecules.

Melting point, ionic groups have strong attractive forces between them and higher melting points, covalent molecules have weak attractive forces between them and lower melting points.

Solubility in water. It is a polar solvent so ionic substances fall apart in water and are soluble. Covalent substances are not.

Electrical conductivity. As solids, neither are good conductors. Dissolved in water, ionic are good conductors. As liquids, ionic are good conductors.

Given the above, covalent substances have a greater chance of being a liquid or a gas.
