The Chipmunk is a youth rifle chambered for .22 Long Rifle. You can also safely shoot .22 CB, .22 Short, and .22 Long.
You cannot shoot .22 WMR (Winchester Magnum Rimfire) AKA .22 Magnum.

Hi Matt.
I have run the NRA Junior shooting program in many towns - for going on 20+ years.
The Chipmonk is a good first rifle. It shoots 22LR, 22 Long, 22 Short and the 22 CB Caps.
The only problem with the Chipmonk - is kids grow out of it really quick. I live in Alaska - a very rifle and kids with guns friendly state. Nearly every kid here age 7-10 gets a Chipmonk. Chipmonks here only last a kid 2-3 years before they outgrow them. Around age 11 the kids need to upgrade to a rifle that is a little longer in the stock and has better peep sights.
When I was 11 back in 1966 my dad gave me a Mossberg 22lr target rifle for Christmas - it was a single shot, no magazine, and it had very nice peep sights. It was just a little big for me, but, after a year it fit me just fine. The fact that it came with really nice peep sights allowed me to use that rifle for the next 7 years in the Junior Shooting program - and - in light rifle competitions for the next 40 years! Now that I am 55 years old - I just used it the other month to shoot in the Senior Olympics!
I guess the point I am trying to make - Chipmonks are a good first rifle - but - come age 11 you will need a better rifle. I am really glad the one my dad got way back then was something I could use and keep for the rest of my life. I still have the original tag/manual that was attached to it with the original price - cost $27.46.

With most semi-automatics and clip using rifles, use the speficated size of .22 (most are long rifle) and don't try other sizes because it will probably jam. With a lever action, bolt action (without clip), or break barrel you can use a short, long, or long rifle if it is specified a .22 lr but don't us it if is is a .22 magnum.

you can get long ones for a .22. Its been years since I used one. I had a semi automatic with a clip (held 10 long .22 bullets). Just be careful around lakes as bullets carry for miles (not like a shot gun shell) and watch for richochet off rocks and objects..rifle is a lot different than a shotgun..be careful have fun...

the chipmunk is a .22lr so it can shoot most all .22lr ammo. not to be confused with the .22mag

Not always. There are several kinds of .22 calibers. Always be sure to use the caliber specified.
