What will happen if I don't get stitches?

An impact on my finger caused a split in the skin. Here is a pic taken today (11-14-2010), two days after the incident: http://comforta.net/cut.JPG

The cut is 2 cm long and 4 mm wide. It is NOT infected.

My question: What will happen if I don't get stitches regarding the healed skin? How will the finger look one year after the cut is healed?

    Hey there.

This does not look like a severe injury and it doesn't look deep.

However... if you don't get stitches you might end up with a nasty scar, and since the injury involves skin over a join there is a distinct possibility that the scar tissue will cause problems flexing/extending your finger once healed.

It's also important to know what caused the injury... was it a dirty object or something rusted? If so you would benefit from getting a tetanus shot.

get stitches. this will not heal properly. you are at serious risk for a blood infection. my wife had a cut 1/3 as long, and had three stitches put in.
