WHAT ARE THE POSSIBLE CAUSES FOR VERY SLOW PERFORMANCE WHEN I FIRST TURN ON MY COMPUTER?

I'm running Vista home edition on a Toshiba 165? satellite computer. My internet connection is Clear wireless. When I first turn on the computer I go through 2 password procedures........then when I open my Windows Internet Explorer. 8.....it takes 3 to 5 min. to open my home page.......Yahoo. But, then it's very slow for several more minutes, taking as much as 5 min to open my mail.......after 20 min or so, it suddenly starts to work more normally, moving quickly to new tabs or pages...... This is relatively new, in the last 2-3 days.

I've run a virus scan and checked other areas but I don't know how to find what's slowing this down so much. Where do I look.

I would say you first of all scan your system with any good system cleaner such as Reginout to clean your system of excessive data that gives errors and cause slowdown. Also, uninstall unnecessary programs. I hope your problem will be solved. Few more steps will also help you:

    1. Make Sure Your Hardware is Sufficient: Above and beyond everything you can do with software to optimize the function of your computer, making sure you have the proper hardware to support Windows is critical.

    2. Clean Your Desktop: Is your Windows Desktop dotted with files? Have you noticed that your computer has been running slower and slower? Do you see the hard drive light often flashing while you wait for the computer to respond to an action? There are steps you can take to fix it. Read this article.

    3. Scan Your Windows System for Errors: An operating system is a collection of files that perform different functions. It is possible, over time, that one or more of these system files has changed or become corrupted. If this happens, the speed of your system may decrease. By using a utility called “System File Checking”, it will inspect these files and correct any problem it finds.

    4. Scan for Viruses, Spyware and Adware: Every Windows computer is vulnerable to viruses. Viruses are nasty little programs that cause both major and minor problems for users. Spyware and Adware are programs created by companies to find out more information about customers, so they can better market products to them. Spyware and Adware can load into computer memory and slow it down.Periodically scanning and removal of Viruses, Spyware and Adware is a great way to improve computer performance.

    5. Uninstall Unused Programs: Over time, you may have accumulated programs on your computer that you do not use. When a program is installed, it creates connections between the program and the operating system. Even if you don’t use these programs, they can slow down your system. If you have the original program’s installation disk or file, removing programs will free up space on your computer and may speed up your system's performance.

    6. Adjust Visual Effects for Better Performance: Windows provides a number of interesting visual effects including animated windows and fading menus. If you do not have enough operating memory (see above number 1), these effects can slow down your computer. Adjusting or reducing visual effects can make a difference.

    7. Don’t Automatically Start Programs: Programs use operating memory (RAM, also called system resources). Unless you always use these programs, you can keep them from loading at Windows startup and speed both the booting of your computer and its performance. Manage startup programs using reginout.

    8. Defragment Your Hard Drive: The more information and programs you have on your computer, the more it is likely that Windows has placed parts of the same file in different locations on your hard drive. It may do this for hundreds of files and programs, depending on how much space is available. Defragmenting the hard drive places all information for each file in one place. The result can be a faster computer experience.

Perhaps you just have too many programs set to run on start up, this can slow your computer down but then I'm not sure about the internet speed thing. You can see start-up programs by clicking on the start icon and typing 'msconfig' and then pressing enter. It should be on the last tab of the window that opens if I remember correctly.

hey richard! it seems that u have a problem with start up.. Maybe some kind of a program its too "big" for the specs of you laptop.. Probably an antivirus that is taking long time to load especially Kaspersky if u have that installed. Of course you laptop will run faster after several minutes because ram stores the program u all-ready opened. So click on start and write msconfig in the search bar and click enter. System Configuration will pop up and u have to click on "Startup" tab. There u can remove any unwated programs u dont want to open as the laptop loads the windows.. give that a try and write back what u did and if that helped you.

    Hope that helped.

I don't know much about computers, just from what I have experienced.

You should get tuneup utilites. It's a really neat program that clears up old backups and old restore points. It does other things such as let me choose what programs begin on startup. I'm sure you could do this all manually yourself, or find a free tuneup program for your computer... but I just use Tuneup Utilities because of it's user-friendly interface. It really helps keep my system run smoothly.

There are several things that could slow down your computer: your computer programs could be using too much memory, you're running out of memory, you have viruses, too many startup programs, you need to upgrade to more cores maybe? I have no way of being sure, but you can always bring it down to a PC store.

My mom's computer had the same issues as yours, it took several minutes to load, her browsers and programs would take minutes to start after clicking on them, her PC ate her internet-- meaning she was not able to enjoy the internet speeds she paid for monthly. So I ended up consulting a PC store manager, and he let me know that her PC was just obsolete. It didn't quite catch up to all the new features of today's internet and technology specs, blah blah. So, I ended up buying her a new PC as an upgrade, and it works just great. Well, I hope you find what you're looking for, hope you get your PC running up to your satisfaction :)

Press CTRL+ALT+DEL then go to processes. it will show you which process is taking more resources. You can decide them to remove them from Startup or may unistall them.
