In the Mac Pages application is there any way to have the font change from black to white where it overlaps...?

a black background object so that it remains legible and then revert back to black when it hits the white again? Is there a masking technique that will do this or do I need to use a better graphics program? Appreciate any advice. I'm lost.

A graphics program would be more suitable, but you can probably work around it depending on how you are placing the text.

Place text box over the background object and align in such a way that there are no letters part on black/part on white area.

Then select the text that is positioned over the black object only and change font colour to white.
