What should a kid know before she (he) leaves home?
Last night I realized that my 19 year old didn't even know the furnace had a filter, let alone how to change it. What basics should a kid know before they leave home. We have gone thru changing oil, a tire, doing laundry, replacing a button & fixing a torn seam. What am I missing?

show him the most basic electric; how to change a wall switch, an outlet, install a light fixture always turn circuit breaker off. show him how to change a faucet washer, fix a leaky drain. you know how many things you need to know to keep a house going.
everybody out there learn from GG-pa's mistake; teach your kids how to do these things and more. not picking on you, GG-pa i know a lot of grown men, some grandpas who can not do any of the things i listed. get him some good tools find him a mentor to help him with repairs, make it understood he will have to help his helper.

Life is not so much what you know but what you learn. All of the things we learn are valuable and more so if we had to learn them the hard way.
I'm not saying kick um out without some basics, But to learn vs being taught. There is a difference.
Give him/her the gift of curiosity and some common sense. They will suprise you.

Better teach him how to handle money, or you will be pestered for the rest of your life.
