What to do when experiencing pain during meditation?

Every time I meditate, after about 5 to 7 minutes, I get sharp muscular pains in my back that then move into my spine after about 8 minutes. This only happens in the seated position. When I'm lying down, it does not happen.

You should just practice and if you are doing it right (Seated with your spine straight, your eyes closed and breathing deeply )The pain goes away as you become relaxed and concentrated on your breathing.

There can be many reasons you would get back pain. It may be that you are not accustomed to to sitting in that position or that your back muscles are weak. I would suggest that you lie down if that is more comfortable. You can also pick a chair with a back and keep your feet on the floor. The most important part of meditation is not if you are seated in the lotus position or anything like that but that you are comfortable enough to reach the meditative state.

Your back is probably not in its natural position. That means your back, including your head, is not 'straight'. But the shape of our back isn't a straight line, it has curvatures. Check your sitting position the next time you meditate. If need be, sit against a wall to help you.

When your back is in its natural position, your should blades, the back of your head and the back of your buttocks should be touching the wall. Hope this helps. If you need more information on how to meditate, you may want to check out:http://theconsciouslife.com/how-to-meditate-a-guid...
