How much is too much for a wedding cake?

My fiance thinks that $750 is too much to spend on a cake that will feed 120 of our guests. He would rather go to Publix. I don't and I am determined to use Eddas for our wedding cake. Any suggestions?

I would say try and stick under $500 but that is just me. I'm so tired of hearing "______ is the most important part of the wedding" because whichever vendor you are dealing with they will fill in that blank with whatever they are selling. i.e. The cake is most important, the dress is most important, the food is most important....but when it comes down to it what is most important is the commitment you are making that day. Personally that is way too much to pay for a cake in my opinion. Cake is flour and sugar for the most part and some higher end places jack up the price because of the name but you can find someone reasonable to make a great tasting cake. More money does not equal better quality. My sister spent about what you are saying on her cake from a famous cake place and it tasted whatever. Not better or worse than others I have had from different cheaper places. Some people will talk about the design on a cake and how it's the "centerpiece" of the wedding. What I say to them is...how silly! The bride and groom are the centerpiece of the wedding and I laugh at you for thinking it's the cake. My guests are coming to my wedding for my fiance and I...not the cake, not the food, not the dress, not the bar, not the favors, not all the other ridiculous odds and ends weddings have these days.

Well, here's the thing... I know your wedding is important to you, but do you want to be paying for your wedding cake three months after the event, or only two? That's the basis for an expensive wedding cake. Half the guests will be drinking and won't taste the cake anyway, and the other half will eat the cake no matter what it tastes like. So, how important is it to you? Is it worth the extra $250 just to use Eddas? Besides, the meal is what people will remember, not the cake.

Personally, I'd take a more practical approach and put that $250 aside to spend on the honeymoon. I'd buy something really special to put on my mantel at home that represents my honeymoon time with my new husband.

Weddings are great, but if you think about it... all that stress and money put into a few hours is a bit silly because the point of the day is to celebrate your love, not to make sure you have the fanciest party.

Congratulations to you - and good luck!

    Publix Wedding Cake

Certain cakes cost less money; it kind of depends on what type of cake it is. I remember reading somewhere that for a wedding cake, you should pay $2 - 3.25 per person. In this case, that would land you somewhere amongst $240 - 390. Then again, depending on the brand and how much decoration or how fancy it is could boost up the price.

I would say that's too expensive, I bet you could find cheaper. Publix would be good, but if you want it professionally done, I bet with a little research you might find a place that suits your needing =)

Well, what is your budget for your wedding cake? Is $750 over that budget or under?

I don't know who Eddas is, but $750 is a little high. I was looking at cakes for 150 people and found at least two very good bakeries that could make it for between $450 and $600 depending on the style and details. The grocery stores were still $250 to $350.

Depends on your budget. If the cake is being specially designed for your wedding, and you can afford it, then the price could be right for you. You want the best for your wedding, but you have to be honest with yourself about whether or not you can really afford $750 worth of cake. As a compromise with your fiance, you could see if Eddas has a line of nice cakes for less? And it's your wedding, not a birthday party...No Publix cake.

My wedding cake will be costing use $115 for 40 people. And for that we are getting a sample cake 1 month b4 the wedding and a free 1 year anniversary cake.

Really it all comes down to what you are looking for. Taste vs Look.

How cool is that I LOVE cupcakes I wish I had cupcakes instead of cakes that is wonderful. I saw a wedding being put together I was on a retreat and in the hotel they were setting up for a wedding and I saw a beautiful array of cupcakes and I asked about it ( I was married a few years already) but I wished I could have done something unique like that the cupcakes were done becauifully and there were icing shaped flowers. Go for it enjoy yourselfe4g

I agree with your fiance. If he is paying for it, consider his wishes that he doesn't want to blow $750 on a stale piece of artwork that is just thrown away the next day. If your parents are paying for it, then it's up to them. If you want it, cut something else out of your wedding for it.

Ask them to suggest a different cake that costs less. Yes, wedding cakes cost more because of tiers and stuff (I was a semi-pro cake decorator) and the sometimes constant change of details. But $750 for feeding only 120 seems awfully expensive.
