If you are meeting half way to save money, that will not eventuate. Two return airfares to a half way point will amount to a good deal more than one return airfare to Canada to Australia or visa versa.

If your desire is to meet at some "neutral turf", where you can both have an adventure, a half way point may not be financially practical. Hawaii for example, while reasonably half way, is not a cheap destination (airfares, accommodation, meals etc.,.) To fly from Australia to Hawaii is only a small amount less than to fly all the way to mainland USA.

You might like to look at the Asian option. Taiwan for example is currently doing a major tourism push, with it's beaches and attractions. Return airfares are cheap and the cost of a holiday there is quite low. Another is Vietnam, perhaps at Nha Trang (central coast) where meals and accommodation are very cheap, great beaches and good country nearby to visit. Stay at a 4 star hotel for under $50 a night and a dinner is less than $10.

You can fly Australia to Asia by far cheaper than to Hawaii. I would think the same for Canada to Asia.

Other Asian options that offer exciting holidays with good country side and attractions are Malaysia and Cambodia.

I have done Hawaii before, going from Australia to Canada... it is nice but I would suggest Fiji as a less touristy destination.

I have flown sydney- fiji-LA- Toronto return several times.

You may be able to get a better connection that doesn't go through LA if you want.

Fiji is a lovely place- lots of cheap but luxurious beachfront resorts.

But watch out for Air Pacific! (they take most of quantas' flights to and from fiji) - have had bad experiences with them... especially as they keep the cabin air temp at about 30 degrees Celsius for some reason.
