How many poems do you think have the word poem in it, and are these appreciated by those who don't write?
I wrote a poem last night that referred to a poem, I read a couple last night, randomly, in a book I have on the go, and I've noticed several on here today. Poem becomes a symbol for artistic expression, for confession, for commitment, and for a whole slew of other things, but do people who don't write poetry (just read it) appreciate that, or do they find this constant poem referencing annoying at best, narcissistic at worst? Just wondering.

Poem is a word that says - "I may be deep - listen to me - see me". I am definitely a Reader. What I write is few and far between. A poem is a delicious word - ♥

In my real life I rarely use the word 'poem' I NEVER say I am a poet....in my neck of the woods that would elicit an awkward silence, a shuffling of feet and then a complete change of conversation.
I don't know anyone who reads, writes, recites or is the slightest bit interested in poetry.
My best friend's husband said to me the other day 'If anyone should ask me, what is it that the world could lose and it wouldn't be missed?' His answer 'Poetry'...I am a reader of poetry as well as a writer (I can say that safetly in my virtual world) so maybe my slant on things doesn't count...but, I don't find it irritating or narcissistic.

i agree with mix in that maybe people who just read poetry or people who aren't into that sort of thing just read over it and don't understand or don't take the time to understand.
In my opinion i think poets who use the word poem in their poem are probably using it for a reason and its not my right to say its stupid. I write in my spare time, i read poetry and i love it, appreciate it.. and everytime i read a new poem or listen to a new poet my love for it grows even more.

Hell I don't know 'bout other people, but the words: poem, poet, or poetry have the same connotations as: painting, painter, or art. Therefore, those that don't write or appreciate it as an art probably just read right over it without a second thought.

As mainly a reader, I appreciate the use of the word poetry in so many different functions.
Interesting question!
