I NEED HELP INSTALLING A DVD WRITER. PLEASE.?

My computer already has CD/DVD player/burner, but I found a Samsung DVD writer on sale and bought it. I opened up my computer and installing the hardware was VERY easy, the plugs were already there, I just had to plug them in. BUT, when I turned my computer on it didn't recognize when I put a CD or DVD in either of the drives. The Samsung DVD writer came with a CD that had a users manual, but I couldn't get it to work. I unplugged the new burner and now my computer is back to normal, but I want to install the new DVD burner and have it all work together. Will someone please try and walk me through this or send me a link where I can find help. Thanks in advance.

Update:

thanks. I don't know if it makes a difference but I'm not trying to replace my old one, just add a second one.

Here is a very good guide to replacing it with pictures and everything.

Best bet would be to replace your current CD/DVD burner to make sure that the new one is working right, then add the old one in to get them both working at once.

More than likely you need to change the jumper settings on the drives so that the slave/master assignments match up.

ok i had this problem because i was connecting both cd and dvd by the same power cable (one power at middle of cable and one at end) and neither was working at all,i just sacrificed the cd because my dvd writer works as cd writer too.

so either change the power source for one of them (dont share the hard disk power with any of them,it will cause problems) or sacrifice one of them and work on the other

you can share case fan power with one and leave the other with no change.
